Small Groups

Lenten Small Group Studies
February 14 – April 1

The blessing of “community” is one of the greatest gifts of God that comes from being part of a church fellowship like South Highland. This year that we have decided to launch another short-term small group experience to deepen our faith journey as we go through the 40 days of Lent in preparation for Easter.

This six-week series will focus on the Lord’s Prayer which is also the Sunday morning focus from the pulpit. Many existing communities within the church will pick up this study and, as before, new groups are forming to convene in homes and locations in the Birmingham area at different times throughout the week. The study groups will begin meeting the week of February 18 and end April 1.

A special feature of the Lenten Small Group Studies will be a daily devotional guide, “Lord, Teach Us to Pray”, written by members of South Highland including a weekly introductory devotional by Ed Hurley. We hope that these devotional guides combined with your group discussions will be meaningful times to contemplate scripture, build community, strengthen old friendships and form new ones.

A brief Facilitator Training session will be held right after worship on Feb. 4 in the library to give you the handbook with questions for your group and to share the basic how to’s of leading a small group. Please consider stepping up to be a group facilitator and/or register your desire to join a Lenten small group.

Lenten Small Group Options:
The groups will meet once a week from February 18 – April 1 (6 weeks). We also have some current communities (Bible studies, Sunday School classes, etc.) that will be adopting this curriculum and meeting at our church. The new small groups are listed below with new ones being added. If you don’t see a time/day that works for you and you are interested in leading/hosting a group OR if you have an existing community group that would like to adopt the curriculum for this study, let us know.

Prayerfully consider your Lenten spiritual commitment. Other recommended spiritual practices for the season of Lent:

I will regularly meet with my Lenten small group.
I will prayerfully commit to read the Lenten devotional and scripture on a daily basis.
I will attend worship regularly throughout the season of Lent.
I will pause regularly before meals to give thanks.
I will intentionally give up or take on something that will remind me daily of my need for God’s mercy.
I will practice the discipline of solitude and silence in order to be still before the Lord (turn off noise, take a walk, pray and meditate, etc.)
